During UOI classes, students were introduced to terms like globalization, immigration and emigration. They were explained ‘migration’ by a story which was read out by the facilitator.Students researched the impact of migration on origin and destination countries using i-Pads and wrote the same in their process journals. Children were supposed to identify the positive and negative impacts of migration on origin and destination countries from the review sheet given to them. Students were divided into groups and were expected to segregate formal and informal letters, during English language lessons. They studied the elements of both styles of writing letters and differentiated between them. We discussed various occasions for writing letters as a mode of congratulating people, thanking them, letter to a bank, letter to magazine editor, etc. and decided upon the appropriateness of the type of letter - formal or informal. Students practiced writing informal letters using the checklist for the format . Subsequently they wrote their reflection on letter writing, in their process journals. In continuation with the concept of ‘Simile’, they also practiced writing a paragraph on the topic of their choice, using similes. In mathematics, students were introduced to the concept of currency. They began by labelling of a Rupee note through an activity. They spotted several features on the note such as signature of the governor, national emblem, Mahatma Gandhi’s watermark, etc. and labelled the Rupee note in their process journals. This was followed by a research session about major currencies around the world. Students were presented with different scenarios to teach them why their home currency cannot be used in other countries and how they need to exchange it before spending it.The concept of currency was further reinforced by making them practice addition, subtraction and multiplication for money. They also solved word problems pertaining to money and worked on shopping bills to gain insight into the practical uses of money.Besides this, students tuned into the concept of division. They were introduced to the division vocabulary and were taught strategies of solving sums on division. In their Hindi lessons, they discussed about good and bad habits which affect our health. They discussed and wrote vocabulary words related to the human body and health. They also made a list of habits related to health and had a discussion on the same. Students also wrote slogans on ‘prevention from diseases’ and they also wrote a small paragraph about the same. In their Hindi ab initio classes, the students took forward their learning of 'visheshan' by making sentences verbally as well as in writing. They listened to the story 'Phootaghadaa' and discussed the meanings of new vocabulary. The theme of the story was taken up as class discussion. Creative skills were honed by giving a new ending to the story. Students read aloud an unseen passage 'Sooraj' and discussed the word meanings for the same. They also practiced their letters and words by doing an activity as teams.peers. Students inquired about Traditional art and Contemporary art.They also observed the paintings of an artist named ManjitBawa to understand how the elements of traditional and contemporary art can be collated together to create an artwork. During ICT classes students played a quiz on Kahoot and were excited to learn and see their scores. Then, they continued to work on their animation in Pivot. In dance classes combination of steps with music in groups of four also practicing a routine for UOI presentation using different type of props to create better effects.

Students tuned into the unit ‘Migration’ under the transdisciplinary theme “Where are we in place and time” through an interesting activity. When they returned after the vacations, their classroomswere locked and they were asked to find a place within school premises where they could move. Later, they discussed the reasons why they were reluctant to move to a new place. Students also read the story ‘Grandfather’s Journey’ and discussed the pros and cons of migration. They worked on case studies in groups and created a T-chart of the various push and pull factors and watched a video. They also marked the places discussed in the case studies on the world map created on the classroom floor. Students inquired about why people migrate from rural to urban areas and created a mind map of the opportunities and challenges faced by people who migrate to cities.In English, students were narrated a story, “When Jessie Came Across the Sea.” The reading sessions were integrated with UOI, whereby the stories revealed concepts related to migration. The students discussed the challenges and opportunities faced by the characters in the stories when they migrated to other places. Following this, they showcased their understanding of the story through writing a summary. In Art, students inquired about the artist ‘Claude Monet’ and observed the impact of his migration on his artwork. To give students a sneak peek into the concept of “similes,” an essential component of creative writing, they were shown a video of the song, ‘Everything at once.’ Once they grasped the concept, they brainstormed about the use of similes in stories and poems. Later, through a fun activity, they created similes for an imaginary person. Students practiced ‘subtraction with borrowing’ using slate boards and in their journals. They also practiced word problems in their process journals. Students were assessed on their understanding of subtraction through a formative assessment. Thereafter students created two subtraction word problems on their own. In Hindi, the students watched a video 'Anokheeyatra' and attempted a 'Listen and Answer' activity. They learnt new vocabulary from the story and formedsimple and meaningful sentences. Students enhanced their verbal skills through a ‘show and tell’ presentation. They were introduced to the grammar concept like adjectives. In their Hindi Ab initio classes, students shared their winter break experiences. They interacted with each other through a variety of questions and enhanced their verbal as well as comprehension skills. The concept of of 'vilomshabd' was revisited and students were introduced to the concept of 'visheshan' through a ‘vocabulary building activity’ wherein the names of the objects around us and their features were discussed. Students also recited the poem 'Sardeeaayee' in a group In ICT, students have started learning animation through Pivot Animator.They learnt to add frames, stick figures and give movements. In Spanish, students revised numbers, dates, classroom objects, colours and definite articles. They learnt numbers from 21-31. In French, students learnt counting from 31-40. They played online games on the intelligent panel such as match-making and concentration. In Music, students played instruments like- recorder, guitar, keyboard and melodica. In Dance, students learnt elements of Jazz like- Jazz walk, buzz stop, pencil turn and attitude turns. In their P.E. classes, students practiced short sprints, shuttle relays, zig zag running and forward - backward running. While pursuing the second line of inquiry under the current unit “Earth’, the students did map marking of some famous land forms and water bodies which they had researched as part of their weekend prep. They also enjoyed an interesting experiment to understand the three layers of the earth.Students attempted a Formative assessment on the first line of inquiry wherein they explained the formation of Earth with the help of a flowchart. Students were shown the journey of a river in which they identified and categorized various landforms and waterbodies which they later depicted in their process journals.Whiletuning in to the third line of inquiry, the students researched about weathering, erosion and deposition. They further enhanced their understanding by watching a video and represented it in a pictorial form in their journals.Students worked in pairs for their Formative assessment on the second line of inquiry. After explaining about their chosen landforms and water bodies, they made clay models depicting the same. In their art classes the students are used the technique of ‘Impressionism’ to create their landscape with poster colours.In their Hindi classes students wrote the causes of sea pollution after watching a video and by reading a story 'Minaamaataakeekathaa' related to the same. They discussed about the causes of climate changes after reading an article related to the same. In English classes students were shown front and back cover of various books post which they brainstormed the elements of the cover page of a book and created a checklist in theirprocess journals. As part of the homework they incorporated all the elements of the book cover and created a beautiful front cover for their novel study booklet. They also enhanced their vocabulary by finding difficult words and their meanings. Students practiced multiplication sums and tried to make real-life connections in the form of word problems in their process journals. They also attempted a formative assessment on multiplication. In their ICT classes students were introduced to ‘Hour of Code’, an online coding activity observed worldwide during Computer Science Education Week in December and they gained knowledge about the basics of coding and using blocks for various themes like Moana, Starwars, Minecraft and Anna and Else. They enjoyed coding and working with blocks.Students attempted an online quiz activity on Basics of Computer on www.Kahoot.it and they enjoyed the activity as they enriched their knowledge as well. In their Hindi Ab initio classes, the students were introduced to the concept of 'miltejulteshabd' and using the same they enjoyed creating couplets and poems along with their peers. A poem about days of the week was practiced with loud recitation and word meaning practice was done through the same. The students learnt about 'aa' maatraa and spoke and wrote vocabulary using the same.Introduction to the unit 'Sense organs' was also done. In the Spanish class students enjoyed watching a Christmas song on YouTube and learnt new vocabulary. In the French class students learnt the vocabulary of seasons and made a mind map of the same. They also watched a song on the same topic to practice pronunciation. Students revised the previously done concepts through a Kahoot quiz in collaboration with other sections. Tuning into the unit ‘Earth’ under the transdisciplinary theme “How the world works” was done through a mystery box activity, wherein students in groups of 4, selected few pictures of various landforms and pasted them on a A3 size paper to brainstorm on how these pictures are connected.A Prior Knowledge assessment was conducted where the students were shown a video ‘Magic of planet Earth’ and were later asked to write the natural features of the Earth. The prior knowledge of landforms was also assessed through a cut and paste activity. Thereafter students matched the key concepts to the lines of inquiry. For the visual understanding of cosmic explosion and the formation of universe and planets a ‘Balloon explosion’ experiment was done and students wrote the reflection of the experiment in the format given to them. In order to gain understanding of concepts like tectonic plates, pangaea, oceans and continents, students were shown videos followed by class discussions and world map marking of oceans and continents. Students further gained knowledge and inquired about the landforms through doing research work on I-pads. Then they presented the information to the class and filled up a collation sheet.In their Art classes, students continued working on their chosen landscapes using oil pastels.In their English classes Students were introduced to acrostic poetry. They investigated about steps to write an acrostic poem and wrote a poem on ‘Earth’. In English students also read the novel ‘Eyes of the Eagle’ and identified adjectives from the text in the novel. Students extended their learning of adjectives to descriptive writing. They watched a video and understood that a person, place, thing and event can be described using adjectives. Students were divided into groups and were asked to describe an Oreo cookie for a person who has never seen an Oreo cookie. They used the ‘5 senses graphic organiser’ to brainstorm and then penned down the description. They explored further into descriptive writing and gained knowledge on how to write a character sketch. Students created a character sketch of any one character from the novel. In Math students continued practising multiplication, they understood the properties and practiced various ‘Mental math’ strategies like multiplication with multiples of 10, partial products and multiplying by breaking up a number into smaller factors and regrouping. They also practiced vertical multiplication of 2/3/4 digit numbers with a ½ digit numbers.Learning strategies likes ‘CUBES’ and ‘RUCSAC’ were recalled while doing multiplication word problems. They understood the concept of groups with same number of objects and using multiplication in solving the same. In ICT, students learnt about Input, process, Output and various peripherals of the computer. In Hindi classes, students learnt to make 'chitrkatha' (picture story) through various activities. They also enjoyed picture stories 'haatheeaurcheentee' and 'aisebaneebaat'. They also revisited the concept of 'gintee' (countings). In Hindi (Ab initio) classes, students learnt to speak, read and write various letters and 'maatra' like 'ee', 'kha', 'thha', 'ksha'. They practiced vocabulary by reading aloud, writing and discussion on word meanings. Students also tried making sentences orally. Students did a role play in Spanish. They also revised the names of classroom objects. In French, students learnt to write and tell the numbers from 11 to 31 which helped them to read and write the dates. They also revised basic greetings. In Music, students played percussion instruments like Bongo, Djembe, Tambourine& Cajon. In their Dance classes the students are learning elements of jazz like - jazz walk, buzz stop, pencil turn and attitude turns. Students were introduced to a new strategy ‘Flipped classroom’ for inquiring into the sense of taste during the 2nd unit of inquiry. A guest speaker session by the school counsellor apprised the students about ‘Good touch and bad touch’. Tuning into the sense of smell was done through a smelling activity where students inquired about how the nose smells. Then they learnt about the structure and function of nose through a video. Real-life connections of the sense of touch and smell were made through an interesting cartoon video. The students enjoyed Formative assessment of nose and tongue done through a quiz app ‘Plickers’. The Summative assessment of the unit required the students to create a poster for their favourite sense organ. In their Hindi class, students wrote a paragraph on 'aankhonkeedekhbhaal'. They shared their thoughts about 'sense organs' with their peers. In English classes students were shown the timeline of Hellen Keller and thereafter were asked to create timeline of the story ‘Eyes of the eagle’. To assess the prior knowledge of rhyming words, students were given a poem to fill up the blank spaces with the rhyming words. Thereafter students created a visual imagery of the poem in their notebooks. Summative assessment to assess comprehension and writing skills of students was also taken. To go deeper into the concept of ‘poetry’, facilitator shared some examples of couplets. Then as a group the students brainstormed and created 2-3 couplets. After watching the video about ‘how to write couplets’, they wrote few couplets on their own. Students were shown how to make a symmetrical human face with special reference to placing of ears, eyes, nose and lips. They were told about the Diwali Rangoli designs made with dot patterns of 5 x 5 and 7 x 7 called Kollam art. They were also shown a video for making a rangoli pattern with these dots and how they help make symmetrical patterns. Students attempted a Summative Assessment in their scrap books on addition, bar-graph and symmetry. They tuned in to multiplication through manipulatives and were shown how to display them as arrays and groups. As a practice activity, a multiplication grid was displayed in the class and each child was given a card. They were asked to pull out a multiplication problem out of the bag and show the problem in one of the ways - Array, skip counting, repeated addition, equal groups. The students then stuck it in the appropriate space in the grid. Students were introduced to the properties of multiplication. They were shown how to multiply numbers with 2 digits. They practiced multiplication of 2 digit numbers with two digit numbers in their journals individually. Students revisited Hindi grammar concepts like 'ling' (gender) and 'vachan' (number).They also wrote their reflection about the camp. In their French class, students learnt about different seasons and the basic vocabulary related to them. They also wrote the questions/answers based on seasons and made a wheel of seasons and months. In Music class, students learnt and played xylophone. In ICT, students learnt creating and drawing illustrations in Freshpaint related to their camp experience. In Art, Students observed different types of Landscapes.They also inquired about the elements of nature. When life is perfect, there are overwhelming smiles. This is what happened at Sariska, students screamed, yelled, laughed, played and danced together. The days were perfect at our camp site. The resort is in Alwar surrounded by Aravalli hills, which is the oldest mountain range of India. Away from the pressure of home and school, two days were comprised of fun filled activities. Activities included rock climbing, obstacle race, shooting, knot making, hiking, rafting, cooking maggi on the hill top, tent pitching. On the eve of children’s day there was a party organised for the children which involved many competitions. The next day, students went for safari where they saw different animals and enjoyed thoroughly. What a wonderful experience it was to see the animals wandering about freely in the forest! Students continue their journey of exploring the different sense organs under their current unit.Provocation to the second sense of ‘Hearing’ was done through an activity – ‘Mystery Noises’ wherein students were made to hear sounds with their eyes closed and they had to identify the source of the sound. Students were paired up to find out about one of the three parts of a human ear - outer ear, middle ear and inner ear and their functions. They were also shown a video to enhance their understanding of the same. Students enjoyed an experiment on how sound travels through the ear and how the resulting vibrations help us to hear. They wrote their understanding of the experiment using the concept of ‘procedural writing’. Students brainstormed on how our ears help us connect to the world around us, followed by a class discussion. |
